Over bite correction and effects on face

#1 Post by Ice »

HI docs, I have an overbite of 5 mm that is going to be corrected by extraction of two upper teeth and then moving the upper teeth back and the lower teeth forward slightly - will this leave me with a strange looking face? has anyone had overbite corrected like this? how does your face look now?

I would have to see pictures and probably a lateral ceph x-ray, but you can expect a variable (mild-moderate) degree of upper lip flattening if your upper incisors are being retracted 5mm.

Hard to say b/c every case is different.

Hi! I'm in the middle of getting my overbite corrected. 8 extractions (including wisdom teeth) and powerchains galore....lol. Anyway, people keep asking me if I've lost weight. I haven't, though the idea is lovely. :)

People have been noticing that my cheeks seem different, thus looking like I lost weight. My face isn't as square as it used to be... I had a really really bad overbite- still do, but not nearly as horrid as when I started.

So, though subtle, I think I am changing a little for the better. :)

oh no, I dont want my face to change :(

But if it means that I wont have overbite anymore then it's all good.

nah, I think you'll be OK. :) I'm sure everyone is different and like I said, I have no proof...lol- just what people tell me. Hang in there!

struggle, that is so funny you should say that as i've been getting that a lot recently. I've given up trying to explain that my face shape is changing for the better, instead i just say "yes i have lost weight, thanks for noticing"

Helllo Ice.

My situation sounds something like yours. Just last week (4th adjustment is next week) I looked in the mirror and said, "Holy Smokes my face is changing". The extractions and subsequent movement have smoothed out my upper lip region, making this area look longer. When the ortho starts yarding the upper teeth backward, this effect will be even more pronounced, even more so still when the lowers begin their long journey backward. So in fact I expect my face to become less attractive (i.e. more 'bird face') as my teeth become more attractive. Orthognathic surgery will then not only line up my bite, but will strengthen the appearance of my jaw and bring better overall balance to my profile, which I definitely want and need.

Another note: I've been cautioned that comparatively sudden facial changes, even for the better, can require psychological adjustment. It's the kind of adjustment I will have little problem with. :-)

Good luck and keep us updated!

Cheers

Glen
