Problem with old retainers

#1 Post by ASU2USC »

I had braces for 14 months in 1995/96 when I was about 14. I'm now 24. I wore my top and bottom Hawley retainers every night until I was 21, then after that I wore them about 2-3 nights per week. Lately (the last 2-3 weeks) I have noticed that the retainers have been making a small mark on one of my top front teeth - it's hard to see unless you get really close. Tonight I went to put them on, and I noticed that the metal on the tooth side of the wire on the top retainer is black. Does this mean the metal wore off? Can this be fixed or do I have to get new retainers?

i would think it's about time for new retainers. they're supposed to last 3-5 years and it's been 10..and also, you grew between then and now so i'd imagine you'd need new ones.
