Experts?
I don't mean to sound like a wise***, but there sure are alot of experts out there.

Damon II 12-12-05--est. 24-30 months
I think Ev's Mom was actually saying in a nicer way what I have considered saying but maybe in not-so-nice a way:
Where are the experts?
I originally thought EM was alluding to those of us who post as "trying" to be experts, but I think (and correct me if I am wrong) that the real issue is that if this is the "Ask the Docs" forum, then where are the docs?
Speaking for myself only, no DDS has any responsibility to post unless they are contracted to do so, so that's up to them. I myself have been frustrated that the thread data on "Ask the Docs", while providing valuable information, is just lay people. As I said, no DDS has to post, but if they aren't going to post, maybe the forum name should be changed. That I can remember in the month or so I have been here, I have seen one post from Dr. J., and that defined the difference between two orthodontic associations. As I see it, if there are professionals available to respond to the posts, great, keep it. But if there are not, should the forum name still be there?
Any guesses what kind of comments people will make about me this time?

Kiwi- I agree 100% with what you said. This is what the master page states - it very definitely gives the impression that the people responding will be "docs" and that there really are "docs". I thought the Metal Mouth forum served as the venue for lay questions about orthodontics.
Again, my perspective is from only one month, but to me the past does not matter. If there are "docs" who will post, great, keep it. If there aren't, even if there were in the past, I think it is misleading to keep it.
Regarding comments about me - unless the post has been deleted, there is one from a "David" on the Metal Mouth/Swallowed Bracket thread that I think is a bit much. I am genuinely hoping someone can explain how his comments can be considered acceptable, especially when all I did was provide the phone number for Poison Control. When I made the comment on this thread about what will people say about me, I was kind of kidding. After reading "David"'s post, the laughter stopped, in all honesty, for quite a while. I am anxious to see what happens.

I wasn't going to post anything but I am kind of annoyed I guess would be the word. I read the post David wrote and to be honest, although I would't have said it in such words...his post makes sense. Telling to call Poison Control was a bit too much. Brackets are not harmful to the body, ortho's (at least mine) even has this written on the information sheets he gave me, and I've seen many orthodontic websites saying brackets are not dangerous if swallowed either. Complications might occur if the bracket gets lodged, but there is nothing poisonous about them.paw655 wrote:Regarding comments about me - unless the post has been deleted, there is one from a "David" on the Metal Mouth/Swallowed Bracket thread that I think is a bit much. Also, while I'm at it, although you are entitled to your opinions and comments, I think I've read only 1 post of yours (of the recent ones) where it's "positive". Everyone is entitled to speak up but for someone to constantly criticize...it gets annoying. You make is seem as if orthodontists and dentists are there just for the money and who knows, maybe you picked one that is...but there are SO MANY that are extremely kind.
And, I seriously find it ridiculous to make such a big deal out of this topic right here. Dr.J comes here whenever he can. He is entitled to post whatever he wants as well. Just like you, he is entitled to post his opinion. Whether he posts 1 message or 60 messages, he is posting, thus "Ask the Doc" and everything that is written below that is fine. I can't even start to understand why you would make such a big deal out of that.

Everyone posts from their own perspective. Because I worked in a psych hospital for troubled adolescents, we had youths ingesting just about every substance you can imagine, liquid, solid, or gas. My position was one that mandated a license by the state - if someone ingested something and I failed to at least make the call to Poison Control (even after calling emergency if required), even if it seemed ridiculous, I could be held liable and be sanctioned or lose my license.
Here's what confuses me. The guy posts that he is worried. Maybe you wouldn't have been worried but he was. So sue me for being cautious, just because that is how I am used to thinking even though I knew he wasn't a suicidal adolescent, and at least offering something, in the absence of knowing what he was worried about. Had he said what he was concerned about I would have made a different response, but he didn't. At least I tried to help him...did you?
Obviously, my post about Poison Control struck a nerve with you so you seized the moment to let me know what you thought of it. The issue with DrJ struck a nerve with me. Six of one, half dozen of another.

here we go....
At the risk of becoming embroiled in something I'd really rather not be associated with...
Wow Paw655 (Allison, is it?). Maybe loosen off on the intensity a little?
I'm sure you'll take issue with this (for a change), but here's my opinion (since there's been so much talk of opinions in your various posts; I'm told I'm permitted to voice mine); TAKE A CHILL PILL! That's not a phrase I've ever really used before, but I think you're the first person I've encountered that needed it saying to so very much!
Yes, we are all entitled to our opinions, and yes we post our questions, concerns and thoughts here for discussion, but like Flora2006 I have noticed many of your posts taking a thread into an unneccesarily negative direction, and that saddens me. I don't log into the forum to read confrontational posts, and I don't image others post here to have their ideas attacked or belittled.
Like Flora2006 (and David) I had resolved just to privately shake my head and move on, but I am moved to say my TWO CENTS (as Kent Brockman would say). R-E-L-A-X. Calm down. No one is posting here looking for an argument (yes I have found several of your posts argumentative and almost confrontational. Inflammatory even. Please don't do that. Certainly I think some things have been taken personally that have been meant in a general sense). We all have serious jobs and professional responsibilities but no one is going to revoke your practising licence for not providing the poison's info number to a person (who's possibly on the other side of the world), with whom you have no duty of care, who has posted a general question to an open forum.
BTW, what do you mean by "I am anxious to see what happens"? At the risk of descending to your level, what is that supposed to accomplish? Is that meant to be a threat of some kind? I really don't understand why you would do that.
To be honest when I read the "swallowed bracket" thread I assumed the concern was for the offending bracket (which I thought was described as having a hook on it?) to lodge itself somewhere undesirable. I thought the blurb on poison from the glue was a little over the top and scare-mongering. Do you really think they'd use toxic glue in your mouth? Cherry-flavoured toxic glue?
But that's not the point. I'm not trying to provoke (yet) another argument here rather attempting to prevent the sullying of the forum. The only negativity (towards other posts and posters) I've come across in this forum has been in your posts. Repeatedly. I must say I find this negativity offensive. It makes me sad. Without exception everything else I've read here (and trust me, that'd quite a lot in the past few months) has always been positive and well-meant.
For the record I thought Ev's Mom's post was a bit tongue in cheek. Certainly not offensive. I definitely don't think it warranted the barrage of negativity you directed at it.
Please don't detract from what is a warm, friendly, supportive network of grown-up people from all around the globe trying to lighten the load of what can be a difficult experience with your negativity.
Nuff said.

Flora2006 and JumptheDitch,
Thank you for your posts. I agree with what the both of you posted.
I enjoy this website and have learned alot from it and it even helped me make my decision on proceeding with orthodontic treatment. Reading the posts from this website should be pleasant an an enjoyable experience. While I understand we all don't agree with everything posted, but if you want to reply, there is a way of phrasing things to state your opinion. I feel if a person continues to be negative, it does get a bit annoying.

This is what I get for opening by big, fat, metal mouth
!!! Honestly folks, I'm just a cynical gal by nature, had I known there would be such a barrage of feelings stirred from my post---I would have done it sooner!!!!
Let's all just lighten up a little, get over it, chill, whatever....My real question is: how do the Docs feel about me post?
