Tooth Positioners

Hello!
My braces have been taken off and my ortho is about to put me into a tooth positioner. She said that I will need to use it for 4-6 months. However, I have just read an article saying that positioners shouldn't be worn for such a long time! I have tried finding info on the net about the pros and cons of positioners, but to no avail! Would you be able to let me know what you think of them and whether using the positioner for such a long time could be detrimental?
