Positioner as a retainer

#1 Post by Paparazzi »

Dr. G,

My ortho is switching me from Hawley Retainers into a positioner to correct a little bit of relapse. When he fitted me for the positioner he said that when he re-evaluates me in late August he might just use the positioner as my retainer indefinately. I've never heard of a positioner being used as a retainer, so does his idea make sense?

Thanks for the help in advance

Hi Paparazzi,

I don't think I can help you with your question--but I'm wondering what the difference is between a positioner and a Hawley retainer? I am getting my braces off soon, and my ortho has told me that he plans to fit me with upper and lower bonded permanent retainers on my front teeth, and a Damon Night Splint to wear when I sleep. The night splint is like a mouthguard, it 'snaps' over your teeth and the top and bottom are attached. Is this what a positioner is like?
