Can I use a bite plate when I have braces?

#1 Post by kzillner »

I just got ceramic braces on my top teeth a little over a week ago (bottom metal ones to come in the next few months). One of my problems leading to getting braces is that I clench my jaw and grind my teeth at night. After my braces were put on my teeth were pretty sore and my bite was changing and I'm pretty sure I didn't grind or clench as my teeth were too tender. Now that that tenderness has worn off I'm pretty sure I clenched and grinded all night long. Today I have a horrible headache and tension in my jaw that I can't get rid of. Called my ortho and I go in tomorrow to see if maybe I need a bite plate. Although I'd love one to help with the pain and the wearing of my teeth I'm concerned that if I did get one it would act like a retainer and be counter-productive to my braces.......is that the case? Does a bite plate work with braces and will it slow my progress? Any info would be appreciated :)

I have ceramic uppers and use a bit plate on my lower teeth at night for grinding. I can see sideways teethmarks on it, so I know I'm grinding. You'll be amazed - no more headaches. I have no idea what I'll do when I get my lower braces put on, but he said he would think of something since it's a habit for me that won't stop.

I was concerned I might need to invest in one of these a few weeks ago.. I think it was because my bite was changing that I started grinding at night.. But TOUCH WOOD!! It seems to have stopped...
