Dr. Randall ~ Question re: changing own ligs

Hi Doc,

I've read of board members changing their own ligs at home and would prefer to do this when I get my brackets. I drink a lot of coffee, black tea, curry, etc. I really want ceramics but am concerned about the hassle of stained ligs.

I was wondering if changing my own ligs would jeopordize my treatment. Would there be changes in force that would slow or alter my treatment if the ligs were changed, say, once a week? Also, if my ortho agrees to my changing my own ligs, would I need to change all ligs on all brackets at once for pressure consistency? Hope this makes sense.

Thanks for your time!

I personally am not a fan of patients doing this themselves due to the chance of bracket breakage. Just set up a short appointment in between visits to change the ligatures, or reduce the coffee/tea/etc intake. I will get patients in once of twice in between visits to change ligatures if it is a big deal to them.

Maybe getting black ligs would help, then you will not have to worry about the stains...........
