Flouride Rinses

#1 Post by privatepilot »

My doctor has made me totally paranoid about getting cavaties while I am in braces. I do all the cleaning religiously. I recently purchsed flouride rinse although my doc never mentioned it. It is necessary or a waste of money?
It's all about ME!

Braces went on 8/25/05. Div II whatever that means!!

I'm curious too

I'm curious about this question myself. My ortho had me use the floride gels, but it always spills out sides of the cap when I travel and I end up with only half a bottle. So, I've been lazy and haven't gotten any in a couple of months. I got ACT fluoride rinse, but I haven't been dilligent about using it.

I was told to get the Oral B Fluoride rinse instead of Listerine as Listerine has alcohol in it and can dry your mouth out. The Oral B actually tastes good and I use it once a day, at night. I usually put some in, swish it around for a minute while I remove my contacts so it doesn't waste any more time. And, as we all know, we tend to be spending a lot more time cleaning our teeth.

I also use the Oral B fluoride rinse every night before bed. I also use Biotene mouthrinse every day in the morning (for dry mouth/canker sores)...I find this routine works well for me, my ortho always comments on my good dental hygeine!

My ortho gave me some Colgate NeutraFluor to use once a week. I also bought some Listerine Teeth Defence after reading about it on this board and now I use it at night.
Listerine is really strong but it really does work and my mouth feels fresh and clean, even the next morning.
I'm going to keep using the fluoride rinses as they don't put fluoride in the water where I live (they're a little bit backward in this state!).

I live in Queensland (bet you guessed that already!). My ortho said that they sell stronger fluoride rinses (like NeutraFluor) at pharmacies but he didn't mention anything about tablets.
I guess the best way to deal with it would be to buy some Listerine Teeth Defence or get a fluoride treatment the next time you visit your dentist.

I tried using the Oral-B anti-bacterial with fluoride, but I haven't used it in a while because it always left that blue gunk in my teeth afterwards

My ortho recommends Swirl, a fluoride rinse for all her patients to use after brushing.

For other mouthwashes gum health etc, I have been advised to be careful in selection as they can stain teeth, cling to plaque and discolour teeth, even after stringent brushing and are not as great as they would have us believe. Apparently Colgate is the best for non-staining.

Hi,

Just to say that I've had severe decay and needed fillings in every tooth.... (although the decay was caused by meds, so no fault of my own :( )

I use Colgate Fluorigard mouthwash. I also need to use Colgate Gel-Kam (which is a fluoride gel) available from dentists, which is (according to my tube!) "As an aid in the prevention of dental caries and decalcification of the teeth"!

If your worried about getting decay - just watch your diet and have an OTT cleaning regime. It's better to be OTT than not, I say!

Good luck.
