Speech concerns

Hi, I got braces to correct lower crowding a couple of months ago - I'm 53 yrs. young and have metal braces. My husband needs the same kind of correction, but doesn't want to get braces after hearing me speak. I've adjusted to my braces and can speak clearly, but at a slower rate sometimes. He's a radio announcer, who does on-air and voice work for a living. Is there any type of braces that cause less speaking issues?

Mine haven't made me talk differently at all, I think braces interfering with speech depends on the person.

As of today, I can't say D's properly. I tried to tell a customer about this website, and had to say it 4 times before she understood me.

Your speech being effected also depends on what kind of hardware you have in your mouth as well. With me I have an upper TPA and a lower lingual arch so I had a heck of a time talking right again!!

How long did it take you to talk properly again?? Did you practice at all?
I've had a lingual arch for a month, and just got the TPA today. I sort of talk with a lisp and whistle a little bit when I talk now. My tongue ring also clicks against the TPA and is quite the annoyance. I guess it might go bye-bye pretty soon.

Tuzzi~ I got my TPA and lingual arch on the same day so I got a double whammy! At first I was speaking slowly just because everything was so awkward. But I would say after a good two weeks I was to the point where people could understand me. And you probably won't have to take your barbell out. I have my tongue pierced as well and it was just another thing I had to get used to. After awhile it will stop hitting your hardware

I am 53 and have lower arch braces, too!
They make me lisp on "s". I put some wax on them the other day. I put the wax so as to fill up the gap between the wire and the teeth - inferior to the brackets and wire. It seemed to help somewhat.
