open bite correction

#1 Post by coynold »

Hi docs,

I have also read on some previous posts that open bites are corrected by elastics...just to clarify, for a bite that is slightly open due to the front teeth being flared a little, did the wire close those teeth down or did the triangle elastics I had do it? Just curious b/c I did not wear the triangle elastics for that long and I'm concerned about relapse if the elastics were the reason the bite closed down.

Also, once my open bite closed, my top teeth were hitting the bottom brackets (couple minor nicks in the teeth)....ortho. tried slenderizing the front teeth..........I want to eventually get the backs of those teeth bonded
to stregnthen them up again........would it be better to get them bonded b/f I get fitted for retainers (since they will be thicker after bonding?)

coynold, just wanted to say i have a slight open bite as you described and some other minor stuff, and the wire and powerchain together has really helped in closing my bite. I have not done any rubber bands. Im not sure if I will have to either. My orhto said that the wire and powerchain will pretty much work on my bite.

If you had a open bite with spacing and flaring of the front teeth, closing the spaces can result in a significant bite closure. I am much happier when a openbite patient has a lot of space to close, or due to the positions of the front teeth requires extractions because I feel that when the open bite closes with minimal elastic wear it will be more stable.

I always seem to be fighting relapse on cases that were closed mostly with rubberbands.
