I'm 24 and will have braces for 2 years this month.
My first concern is that I had a normal tooth extracted to correct my overbite. That gap STILL hasn't closed up. It's small, but it is still there.
Secondly, I was at the ortho for my monthly visit in september and we're supposedly nearing the end of my treatment. He asked me what i don't like about my teeth and i told him i want the front 4 teeth to be flatter - so my arch is a little more square shaped rather than rounded. He looked at me, laughed, and said "We can't do that! Your teeth will look fake! Everyone who has had braces looks like that. I want you to look like you were naturally born with perfect teeth, not like you had braces." OK so I didn't say anything of course because he's the doctor. But the more I look at my teeth the more it upsets me. I WANT them to look fake. I WANT them to look like I had braces because I've had to wear them for so long and I want the world to know it!
What should I do??? Can I go to another orthodontist to finish this treatment? I am getting so frustrated with him and I think he's an idiot.
Thanks!
NOT LIKING MY DOCTOR AT ALL!!! Can I go to another one?

tough one
If the guy is just a jerk I can see why you may want to move. But a flat in the front archform is hard to obatin. In fact my mom is in braces and driving me to the brink of insanity with wanting a broad flat smile. It's not the fake braces look that makes me not deliver this. I have to keep the teeth in the middle of the bony housing. The front of the arch is supposed to be arcuate in nature. Some folks have that flat smile ar but that is diue to the morphology of the face and the bony architecture. it is not just a case of it being an option we can alwyas deliver. If your arch is triangular or V shaped I could see your point (got pics?).
We often hear patients say, I want my teeth like ************** (insert celebrity name here) but this is not just b/c of good orthodontics. It good genes! Not to say your genes are bad but arch shape is something that must stay within a definitive parameter of the basal bone structure. If the doc would have taken the time to give a good scientific reason and not a smooth/smart *** answer maybe you would feel different. Sounds like his communication needs work. Talk to him again

Geez, treating your own mother with orthodontics, that could spell insanity for BOTH of them.momof2grlz wrote:You are too funny, Dr. J.In fact my mom is in braces and driving me to the brink of insanityEver think maybe she's paying you back for all the times you drove her to the brink of insanity?
Payback is a bit**! Keep up the good work.

natasha, i have a flat front and I HATE IT!! my teeth just don't look straight but i can definitely live with it compared to what i had 2 years ago. i wish i had a more rounded symmetrical look. i think you have the best look.NatashaP wrote:What should I do???
