appliance /braces

Hi doc
my ortho put spacers in frnt back teeth for 2 weeks then said I have to wear an appliance to widen my top jaw ,then braces is this normal .I thought I would be in braces way befor this.

That's what my brother's doing and two of my friends have had that same treatment too.
