braces on crowns

#1 Post by Whitney »

Could someone please share any experiences you have had with having braces on your crowns? I have NEVER been happy with my four front crowns and am going to have braces on them soon. The ortho. doesn't think it is "such a big deal" but I am a bit scared of the whole experiences as I have visions of one of my front teeth cracking off. Any help would be appreciated!

I completely understand your fear. I actually have a crown on my right lateral incisor(the one next to my front tooth, my left incisor is my other problem area :? ) and i was very worried about the whole process of braces w/ that. It actually has been just fine. I have had the braces on 9 months now and no major issues. I was really concerned when they did the impressions i just knew it was going to pull it off but nope the lady doing it reassured me she recently had braces w/ crowns and no problems. Now one problem they do often run into is the brackets staying attached. for some reason the glue just doesn't hold as well. So twice (in the whole 9 months) I have had it come off and both times were while the ortho was doing work. Worked out fine becuase they just glue it back on and keep going. So far that tooth/crown area seems to be moving w/ the rest of my teeth just fine. I think they are stronger than what we realize. One option is tell them you are nervous and they could just hold there finger under or behind that tooth to keep some pressure off while working on it. I notice some of nurses/dental techs (not sure what they are called at a ortho) do that when working. Hope I made you feel a little better because I had the same concern.

Thanks for the reassurance. I am sooooooooo unhappy with my crowns. The biggest problem is that I have (for 30 years) sucked my thumb! I know, it is embarrassing but I have to be honest. I ended up with the crowns because of bulimia. There isn't a heck of a lot of tooth under there to begin with BUT they sure did move from thumb sucking!!! Thanks again

For one whole year my bracket on my crown stayed put, then it came off, reapplied, came off again within a week. True, its hard for brackets to stay glued on them, thats why they use bands mostly on crowns.

crowns

Hi,
I have 2 crowns, all was going well until I started wearing elastics on one of the crowns. Seems like I was going in every other week to have the bracket glued back on. We have shifted the elastics to the next tooth and all seems to be going well now. The crowned teeth are moving well and are looking good !
Good Luck
