In my experience, daily cleaning takes care of most of this. When I don't clean my retainers daily, there's an odor. I soak mine during meals in mouthwash and water, and use a denture cleaner every few days. My suggestion would be to find out what your ortho's office recommends. Some people have said they were told not to soak thier retainers, so the only constant piece of advice out there is to talk to the ortho's office.

I use denture cleaning tablets on mine, and it works great. You can usually buy them in the grocery store, or at your drugstore. Also, make sure that you're cleaning the case you keep your retainer in (if you aren't wearing it 24/7).
