Retainer pain - normal?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Retainer pain - normal?

#1 Post by weird_wired »

So I got my top archwire off, and a fixed retainer put behind the upper front teeth, and two days after a clear removeable retainer.

The removeable one is making my teeth hurt and sensitive (not unbearable, but kind of like after getting braces for the first time in a milder way). Is this normal, and how long should it last?

I know how you feel about the pain. I have just got my hawley retainer for upper two hours ago and was told to wear it today as much as I can (only nights after that). I have had my braces off for a week and had a temp. retainer for a week.

My mouth is in pain! my retainer feels like it is slipping over my teeth. The part that touches the roof of my mouth I can move up and down. I thought it was meant to fit tight against the roof of my mouth.

Am I meant to be able to move the roof part of the retainer up and down? Its only slight, but it means swallowing is difficult. And its so thick!

Your teeth can move really fast without a retainer in so maybe they are adjusting to it after not having one in? I don't know why teeth hurt sometimes, I think it means they are moving.

Can you give your ortho's office a call and tell them. They might want to take a took.
