Gagging on retainer

#1 Post by Leslie022 »

I got my essix retainer on Tuesday. I wore it that day and had no problems. Yesterday, I started to gag everytime I put the retainer on my teeth. The only thing I can think of that could be causing this is that I usually rest my tongue on the top of my mouth. The retainer doesn't let me do this in the area right behind my teeth. Also, if I'm the slightest bit hungry, I gag with it...

I'm just wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

It took me a full month of constant wear to get used to my Hawley retainer.

The retainer should fit tightly to the roof of your mouth. If it doesn't and you find that you are still gagging, tell your ortho.

Nowadays, I tend to forget that I have my retainer in; that's how comfortable it is. But it took me a while to get to that point!
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!

Hi,

I got my Essix retainers and your post could have been written by me. I experience
just the same thing. Day 1 was ok, day 2 now and I feel a constant gag reflex. Strange.

How are you doing now ?
