Retainer too tight??

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Retainer too tight??

#1 Post by Brooke »

Hey everyone,

I went today to have my retainer tightened which I have done a few times before with no problems. I know that sometimes they can feel a little tight at first but nothing to major. Today I went because my retainer was feeling really loose and I needed to get it adjusted. The ortho put the retainer back in and it felt tighter but nothing out of the ordinary but throughout the day my teeth have been feeling sooo sore. I havent felt sore teeth like this in a long time! I can barely take out the retainer and when im taking it out the pain in my teeth is very apparent. I even see a dent in my gums from a part of the retainer. Is this normal? Its just i've had a retainer adjustment before without this sort of pain. Anyone else have this happen? Should i go back and let them know its too tight? Or is it supposed to be this way? Help appreciated. Thanks.

Ooh...sounds like you need to call your orthodontist about this.

I don't know if you should continue to wear it until they can see you again, but you need to call!!!

Today the soreness has subsided but I did call and let them know. I have an appt for monday as they are closed fridays. Now I have a new problem.. my bite is feeling a little off... I don't know if maybe this is because my retainer was a little lose for awhile and maybe the adjusted retainer is working the right way at readjusting my teeth or what. I know that when i first got my retainer after braces my bite shifted a little... and it seems to be happening this time. Any insight on the bite?
