How long can I NOT wear my retainers without shifting?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

How long can I NOT wear my retainers without shifting?

#1 Post by ronni »

Hi all! I got my braces off about 2 weeks ago and have been a faithful retainer wearer since I got them. BUT, I just had my wisdom teeth removed on Friday and the retainer (essix) really bothers my wisdom teeth sockets that are trying to heal.

I have been trying to wear them only at night since the pain of having them in is almost unbearable. So far, I haven't noticed any movement and my retainers still fit the same when I put them in at night. But how long can I keep this up? The oral surgeon says I have another week or so until I'm healed enought that my retainers wont bother me anymore.

Has anyone else had a scenario where you could not wear your retainers for an extended period of time?

Thanks in advance!

I have my upper wisdom teeth that are compacted above my last molars. They need to be removed and I was concerned about movement even with a retainer. My ortho said I shouldn't experience movement. Of course that's my mouth and everyone may be different.

If I were you I'd just keep fitting the retainer and put it in as soon as you're able to. Good thing it's still fitting well!

Thanks for replying! I actually called the Ortho and he said I would be ok for a few days without wearing the retainers.

But now my gums are healed enough and I have started wearing my retainers again. I'm feeling much better!

I wore my retainers faithfully 24/7 for the last 3 1/2 months.
Recently I got my implants and bone grafting in and wearing the retainer is just too irritating even with the adjustments made to it. Its been almost 2 weeks, I haven't noticed much movement. I am able to get the retainer in easily but can't keep it in because of the irritation.

I'm holding my breathe and hoping the gum tissue heals quickly.
