Hawley Retainers -- Color Choice Typical?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

I definately fall into the "boring" category with color. I have cermaics and have had wire ties and clear or pearl power chains the whole time (by choice of course). I'm about ready to have my braces removed and just might consider some color on retainers. One question I have is how visible is the lower retainer when speaking, yawning or any other normal functions of the mouth???? In other words, when you pick something colorful, do others see it? Seems like on the bottom it would show, maybe not on the top. Colorful for me I think would be a light pink which doesn't come close to some who have posted here

Good idea, KK; Meryaten's office certainly surpassed themselves with her retainers!

Not too long now; I feel like a little kid counting down the sleeps til Christmas! :-*
Am hoping I can pursuade Mr Ortho Man into doing blue retainers with silver sparkles. All he can do is say no...

Fingers crossed!

With all your progress, any word from your ortho on an ETA for your retainer-selecting days?

Can you see the retainer in your mouth at all?

Yay! Something else to look forward to at the end of my two and a half year sentence. Those rainbow tie-dyed sparkly retainers are just about the coolest things I've ever seen! Must start thinking about my color choices now, so I make sure to get something equally awesome.

I chose clear because it's plain and won't be visible, but it's not such a good thing when it's sitting right in front of you and not visible.

My ortho had a book of "designy" ones but ran out so I had a choice of clear, pink, or sparkly weirdly colored ones.

Thanks KK, I'm still a bit amazed that it's actually happened and they're really off!

Now if I can just master speaking around all this arcrylic without slobbering on everyone I'll be right...

Hmm, no rough patch, Meryaten, all very smooth.

Speaking is getting better but still very thick sounding. Unfortunately my job involves speaking over a radio for 12hr shifts, with Saturday nights our busiest period of the week so we'll see how it goes tonight! I went to a work function last night bravely sporting my retainers and found I had to repeat myself quite a bit

Oddly I find the essixes worse than the hawleys, speechwise.

Just a learning curve I guess. I love brushing and flossing sans braces though; it takes about a tenth of the time :D.

Thanks Alexa, I'm pretty happy with them :D.

Food for thought, Meryaten, I have to go back to the ortho next week cos my lower essix doesn't fit properly on one side (sticks up a centimetre or so, no matter how hard or often I try to push it down :x) so I will ask him when I ask him to shave the bulk down a little.

Am hoping he will let me wear the hawleys full time rather than the essix during the day.

After molds were taken, the assistant asked me what color I wanted for my Hawley. I chose clear...and later regretted that I had not chosen hot pink, lol.

I had a fixed retainer on the bottom and essix, until 3 days ago. I had to have the bottom fixed retainer removed and they ordered a hot pink lower Hawley for me to close a very slight space.

I believe my ortho's office can do any color and glitter that is requested.
Upper Ceramic: 8/13/04
Lower Metal: 01/13/05
Removed: 4/19/07 (finally!)

Retainers:
Upper Clear Hawley
Lower fixed & Essix
Lower fixed removed 7/06/07 (due to a small space). Lower Fuschia Hawley 7/18/07

I am very happy that I looked through this forum, I had no idea that I could possibly choose the colors of my retainer. I am going to ask my ortho do I have this option when I go to my next appointment. I want purple with my name on it!

No choice here......which is OK with me since I had ceramics and used clear or pearl powerchains and wire ties the whole time with braces. Boring is fine with me as I stayed as low profile as I could get the whole time.

Oh... My... God...

For the first time since getting my braces on I'm beginning to get excited about getting them off. Not because they are bothering me, but because I am excited about picking out a retainer! LOL! I thought choosing colorful powerchains was exciting... Meryten you have no idea what you have inspired in me. My ortho told me I could have essix retainers and I have felt the whole time that I'd rather have a hawley, now that I've seen the coolest retainer ever made (yours) I'm certain of it!
Sparkles... decals... the mind spins with possibilities!!!
