What can I eat and not eat now?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

What can I eat and not eat now?

#1 Post by AtomicSkier »

As you may know I have retainers now, and I was wondering if it would be okay to take my retainers out just to eat some popcorn or something small as a snack...

I'm afraid my teeth will move when I'm not wearing the retainers...

EDIT:

Also, whats the time limit of teeth moving when I'm not wearing retainers?

KK wrote:AT if you read many of the stories on this forum, often people don't get their retainers for a week or two, so I'm guessing that teeth don't move quite as quickly as we expect, or that they can easily be corrected, when the retainer is put on. I'd not recommend you go naked for too long ... like a week, but I'm sure you can remove your retainers to snack and eat, as long as they go back in that night, or soon after.

If this is somethiing that's making you real nervous and upsetting the routine of your life ... please give your ortho a call and get advice from the expert!

Good luck!
Okay. Thanks! Should I wear my retainers while playing any sort of sport?

Ahh okay. Thank you!

So like right now, I'm eating popcorn, and have my retainers out. There should be no movement correct?

I'm just nervous and not used to it really.

Okay. Will do!

He's out of the office till tomorrow....

Here's a question that you might be able to answer:

Can I drink with retainers in?

Heh, I was at my local coffee shop, and I saw my ortho there on his lunch break and I asked him what was the maximum amount of time I can keep my retainers out, and he said if I'm at a beach for the day, I don't have to have them in....

I also asked him about the wires and where they are on my teeth, and he said they are fine....yippie. I feel better now about the retainers... :) :D

My ortho said no sports with retainers.

Running, swimming, and working out on machines at the gym were okay, but nothing with any contact...not even tennis!!

Could loose it and step on it or could get hit in the mouth and do damage to the mouth with the wire or acrylic parts of the retainer.

What sports were you referring to?
