Nasty taste

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Nasty taste

#1 Post by flipib05 »

I have had my retainers for around 4 months or something close to that and I brush and floss right before I go to bed and when I wake up my mouth tastes so gross. As soon as I wake up I have to take out my retainers and brush them as well as my teeth. Does anyone else have this problem? It was never this bad when I had my braces but now it's almost unbearable for me. Any suggestions, comments are greatly appreciated. :)

Yep, same here.

Sometimes when I take that sucker out in the AM, my teeth even feel dirty and I know I cleaned them VERY well before putting in the retainer.

I usually do a quick rinse with mouthwash WITH the retainer in first thing in the morning and then go down stairs and take it out and drink cups and cups of coffee. They I clean the retainer and my teeth and put it back in.

No answer as to why this happens, but you're not alone!

My teeth sometimes feel dirty also when they are clean. And my retainers are clean also. The backs of my teeth especially feel so nasty and dirty like its been forever since they have been cleaned. :(

I have an essix retainer and in the morning my teeth feel disgusting. I take my retainer out and brush right away, then drop the retainer in Retainer Brite while I shower. After all that I'm minty fresh again! :) It is a pain though; no more being lazy in the mornings and staying in bed - gotta get the funk out of my mouth!

I'll have to throw in a plug for the Sonic Brite cleaning system sold on this site. It is supposed to kill 99.8% of bacteria and I beleive it does. I was really afraid of getting gross teeth and a gross mouth with retainers (hawley) but this little cleaning machine has really done the trick for me. It can't be used with retainers with solder points though....maybe your retainers have those points. My retainers always feel clean and non-stinky (-:

My problem isn't the retainer getting gross, it's my teeth!

I clean the retainer regularly both with toothpaste and with retainer brite and it's lovely, bright and it is always stink free!! My mouth, on the other-hand, is grungy and dim (and most likely stinky) in the morning.

I've been thinking about it. MAYBE With that wire across everything in front and the acrylic covering everyting on the otherside, maybe that interrups something that goes on naturally in my mouth...maybe like running my tongue over my teeth or inside of my lips rubbing them.

Who knows. I look forwad to that 12 months mark when I don't have to wear it every night!

I have the same problem with my expander (removable). My uneducated guess is that normally our saliva moves freely around our mouths while we sleep and we occasionally swallow some of it. When wearing retainers some of that saliva gets trapped in all the nooks and crannies and becomes stale (for lack of a better word). Just my guess.

I have noticed that often the "yuck mouth", as I call it, can be worse when I brush/floss before bed than on the lazy nights that I don't.

Yeah, my problem isn't my retainers because when I take them out in the morning I let them soak in plain old water until I get home then I do 50/50 mouthwash and water until I get ready for bed and then I brush them and then floss and put them in and then rinse with mouthwash again. But in the morning..... its gross.
