yea i don't want essix style , i drink tea a lot an the stain would be rely bad , an taking them in an out all day for me would be a pain , i had a type of essix type sitesplint for my tmj treatment , that i wore for over a year with my braces , i was very happy when they started cutting it away to expose the molors an pull them into place with elastics , an then it was gone , i'm looking foward to the HAWLEYS ,

Headgear Joe: based on my experience this past week I would say you are soooooo lucky that they want you to have both types of retainers! (I think with extreme overbites this is common). Last Thursday they put the bonded top and bottom retainers on me and although they are retaining the top and and bottom six teeth fine, spaces are appearing already between all of my back teeth that are not in the bonded retainer.
Yesterday I had a hygiene appt and dental exam and my dental insists I go back tomorrow for a new consultation with orthodontist to discuss all these spaces. I wish they had given me both types of retainers like you are getting because if they don't what retains the back teeth? When I called the ortho office yesterday they tried to tell me that a bonded retainer is supposed to stop all movement on all teeth..that makes no sense to me. Anyway, hopefully tomorrow I will get what I want: a hawley for the top to close back up those darn spaces that opened up & also to tweek two teeth that are not fully in alignment with the others. I will wear my Hawley forever at night if I am lucky enough to get one too!

sorry yor having probs way to soon , to me it's kinda strange that teeth are bracketed an wires are put on for years an they tell you to wear your retainers or your teeth will move , BUT then they only bond six teeth with a bonded retainer, what's going to happen to the others there going to move back in there old place kinda like not wearing a retainer , but hay this is just my thought , i guess a single wire is cheeper an quicker to install, an you can bet i'll wear my RETAINERS i don't ever what this much metal in my mouth agian , i want to be free, have a great day an let me know what your orthodontist said

Thanks Headgear Joe! I agree with you completely. The ortho office called about 5pm, cancelled my consult appt and said they would discuss my concerns with me when I pick up my retainers (?) today. She said the spaces when they first come off are perfectly normal & that the retainers will close the gaps. Apparently I'm getting an Essix to wear over the bonded ( the assistant told me that was just an emergency back up in case the bonded one broke..I hate wrong information!). I still want the Hawley to wear over it like you are getting instead even if I have to pay for it because then maybe she can tweek the 2 teeth I am unhappy with. Wish me luck..appt is at 3:20 this afternoon..I'm actually nervous!
You'll be free before you know it Joe..you are almost there now! I know you've waited so long!

Today my ortho said that indeed the spaces were perfectly normal and would close in around 3 months and that it takes a year for teeth to settle. She assured me everything is fine. She removed the bonded retainer on one upper canine so that the new retainer she is making will push that recessed canine out a bit! (yay!) I also got a Hawley on the bottom today with a spring to push out my back molar just a little bit more and I will only wear that for 3 months. She assured me that the bonded retainer will be all that I need after these two problems are corrected. My ortho has a ton of degrees and I am just going to have to put my faith in her. She says she's happy with where I am at right now and after seeing her today I feel much more reassured. Now if I could just get this Hawley on the bottom to stop irritating my gums on one side..I think it needs to be filed down a bit. (Can I do this myself???)

That's what I was afraid you would say!
Darn it, it's very sharp on one side and I thought I read somewhere that people were using an emery board to file them down a bit. I'd really hate to ruin it though so I'm sure I should just leave it alone and use a bit of wax. That's good to know your gaps closed after a few months!
