Bonded retainers and dental cleanings

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Bonded retainers and dental cleanings

#1 Post by Dreamer »

Today was my debanding after 32 months! Yay! It feels wonderful to have my braces off! My teeth are in great shape, no stains and actually look surprisingly white! I'm pretty happy! I have bonded retainers top and bottom and my question is just how careful does the hygenist have to be with these when doing a routine cleaning? I have my cleaning due on Monday and am kinda nervous she make break the adhesive on my bonded retainers! Jennielee? Others who have been through this, can you reassure me? Also how long did it take you to get used to that wire in the back of your teeth..my poor tongue won't stop playing with it!

CONGRATS!!!!

My dentist does the cleanings herself and she has not had any trouble cleaning around my llb retainer. She uses the jet thing that sprays baking soda to clean my teeth. She left me to do the flossing since she said I'd been doing such a great job.

She did tell me that she has seen tarter buildup on and under some bonded retainers, but said I was doing an awsome job keeping mind tarter-free. I asked about what she'd do in that situation she said she'd have to use a scaler and pick it off being very careful with the bonding material.

AS for your tongue playing with it...well...get used to it. I still play with mine and it's been 8 months.

Hmmm...my dentists office has never used the baking soda spray to clean my teeth..sounds great! I'll have to ask about that. I'd also like to find someone who does the ultra sonic cleanings!
Thanks Jennielee!

The cleanings will go fine. My hygenist doesn't have any problems cleaning around my bonded retainer. Also, after 3 yrs I still play with it with my tongue. You get used to it, but tend to still play with it.

My hygeniest did fine with my cleaning on Monday! I think I worry too much! :) I am getting used to the bonded retainer and it's very easy to floss with it already!
