Bonded retainers - top and bottom - speech issues?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Bonded retainers - top and bottom - speech issues?

#1 Post by marjak »

Hi all

I've had lingual braces on both my top and bottom teeth for the last year or so. Although I quickly got used to the discomfort of these braces, I have has some speech issues with the top brace, as is quite common from what I understand.

Luckily I'll be having the top lingual removed in about 3 months time which I'm very pleased about. My orthodontist has recommended that I have a bonded retainer on the top and eventually the bottom teeth.

However, given the fact that I have had speech problems with the top lingual brace, I am a little worried that this problem might remain if I have a bonded retainer on the top teeth.

Has anyone had experience of going from lingual braces (with speech problems!) to bonded retainers on the top, and was speech still an issue?

Many thanks in advance for any help or advice you can give.

I had lingual braces on top, had little difficulty with speech other than the "s" sound. I now have bonded retainers top and bottom.

The profile of the bonded retainer is significantly lower than that of linguals. I have absolutely no speech problems whatsoever.

Many thanks to everyone for your replies. I was glad to hear that it hadn't caused too much of a speech problem for any of you, as that's not something I want to live with for too long!

Thanks again.
