If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.
Has anyone had fillings replaced or other dental work done on the teeth that have bonded retainers? Does the retainer need to be taken off before the work can be done?
I’m expecting to get bonded retainers after my braces come off in the next few months and was wondering if I should get the dental work done before the retainers go in.
I'm currenty in that situation....I have bonded retainers top and bottom and am having dental work done....they DO get in the way of a lot of stuff. My dentist absolutely hates them. He's now in contact with my orthodontist back in Tx about removing them and going to regular retainers.
Thanks for the info, Higgy. Based on your experience, I'm thinking I should ask for regular retainers until I get all the dental work done and then get bonded retainers. Will have to find out if there is an extra cost for that.
I have no work that needs to be done on the lingual side of any teeth...but they still get in the way. We had planned to do veneers after braces...but even to do the molds properly for the veneers, the bonded retainers would have to be removed. One of the biggest problems my dentist has is that if there is any work that involves using composite near the side of a tooth, he needs to place the metal piece in between the teeth to be sure the composite stays on the right tooth, which is impossible with the bonded retainers. They also can't use the daimond sand-paper stuff to get the contact down between the teeth because of them. My bonded retainers unfortunately haven't prevented movement, and my bottom tooth that they worked so hard to rotate is rotating back.
