I just got a bonded retainer on the bottom.....help!!
Hi everyone. I am very sorry to say that I just fell upon this wonderful group today, the day I got my braces off!!!
But after years of braces, and upper AND lower jaw surgery, I am happy to get rid of them...
However, I got a bonded retainer on the bottom today, as well as the top. The top is not too bad, I barely feel it.
But the bottom one (which I got today) is irritating my tongue big time, and I have a lisp!!!
What gives? Help!!! Please

Hello!
I also got my braces removed today and got bonded retainers on my uppers and lowers as well!
I don't really have an answer for you other than contact your Ortho tomorrow ASAP. They may need to reposition it, or re-glue it to make it more comfortable. I feel both my upper and lowers, but neither is irritating my tongue or giving me a lisp.
Another option is to give it time. Your tongue may toughen up after a few days. It's been through a lot today, with that sour etching chemical stuff that they probably used on your teeth to prepare for the bonded retainers.
Lisps also can go away with time.
Good luck and congrats!!!

congrats on getting your braces off, we'd love to see some photos!!
as for the bonded retainer - call your ortho and ask if you can be seen. it is probably just irritating until your tongue gets used to the retainer, however it may be glued in incorrectly. either way, its better to know for sure : )

Yes, I'm so happy to have them off! I will post up some pics later.
As far as the retainer is concerned (the bonded on the bottom), it actually feels about 80% better this morning. It doesn't irritate my tongue nearly as much. I suppose I just freaked a little prematurely.
However, I'm still having trouble with my "th"s and "s". Anyone else experience this problem??

I got a bonded retainer on the bottoms too. It takes but a few days for your tongue to get used to your new appliance. The biggest hinderance I found was its harder to floss around it but as time goes on its easier to floss and my tongue barely notices it anymore.
Braces on 9/01/2006- Braces off 4/14/08
Just got my braces off yesterday, 7/10, and got a bonded and an essix for nights only. With this being the third time of getting braces off(this time I had them lowers only) I would have thought no problem.
My problem is that this time I was given a bonded retainer that is glued to all six teeth, rather than the one that is only glued to 2. I am finding that I am having a minor lisp, and that it i driving me crazy as well!
Anyone else in this post, or others reading have this type of bonded retainer? If so, is it glued flat against each tooth, and any flossing tips are appreciated!

Yup, mine is bonded to each tooth. It is pretty flat against the tooth surface.Just got my braces off yesterday, 7/10, and got a bonded and an essix for nights only. With this being the third time of getting braces off(this time I had them lowers only) I would have thought no problem.

Re flossing, you can do one of two things for bonded teeth between the wire and gum margin:
* Use superfloss;
* Use piksters (proxy brushes) up and down the gum margin (which is what I do, on the advice of my dentist).
I floss all other teeth as I would normally, and floss above the wire on the bonded teeth.
Thanks, Lionfish! I will have to go out and find some of those piksters.
Last night, I discovered that the glue has already come loose from one of the teeth, too. Has anyone had that happen? If so, did you experience any movement before you were able to go in and get it fixed.
Sorry to sound like I am complaining too much here and thanks!

I had two glue spots break lose from mine and yes, a tooth moved.
Unfortunately, the assistant just reglued and didn't bother to try to push the tooth into position (yes, that can be done). The assistent who originally did all of my work (and who knows this can be done) has left the practice so I had a BRAND NEW one.
At my last retainer check the ortho was alarmed that a tooth was out of line now and glued into place with the retainer bonding. He said he'd look at it in about 12 weeks and maybe pop the retainer off and use an essex to straighten them again then re glue. I don't know that I care that much anymore. It looks straight unless you're looking very closely at them.

Well, here's an update:
My bonded retainer-problems (lisp, tongue irritation) went away for the most part, but I was still having problems pronouncing some words, and I had to be THINKING a lot more while talking so I could hide it better. I HATED doing that!
So, yesterday, I'm biting into a Snickers bar and my entire bottom bonded retainer pops off. Thank You Snickers!! I immediately felt so much better and could talk normally. So I took long metal object and pried off some glue that hadn't come off, and called the orthodontist.
I had my appointment this morning and told him to please not put it back because I hate it! So they are going to put in an Essex retainer on the bottom, and he's just hoping I wear it. I will at night.
But thank goodness I don't have to put up with that piece of crap anymore.
BTW, the top one is fine. I have a bonded one up there, too, and it was a bit of a hassle the first 3 or 4 days, but now I can't even feel it. I thought the same would happen with the bottom, but it just never did....
