Essix cutting my mouth

#1 Post by AliceCullen »

I've been wearing my essix retainers for 5 days now and one side is really cutting up my tongue. It is making the wearing of them miserable. Should I attempt to file it down myself or call the ortho and try to get in to the office? I am afraid of doing damage to them myself. Anyone else have this problem?

Yes. My first set cut me at the back of my mouth. I took a nail file to it. They're pretty robust.

If you can see exactly where the he problem is. It might be very simple and you could file that piece a little bit.Sometimes when they make the Essix retainer there will be a little section that they did not sand down all the way and you will feel it. I would not be afraid of sanding a piece down if you can see the problem area.

I would call the ortho just to be safe. Essix retainers should NOT be cutting up your tongue like that :(
Maybe some of the plastic is too lifted and is not flush against your gumline..if that makes any sense
