Bonded Retainers

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Hi,

My front six on both arches are bonded and I wear essix retainers at night.

The bonded wire is very thin and barely sticks out at all. It is glued onto the back of the teeth, there are no additional wires to hold it in place. I had impressions for the essix made after the wire was attached so there is a slight depression in the essix to accommodate the wire.

As far as comfort is concerned, I have no problems with this combo. They're not bulky for me, although I have read others saying that they can be.

Regards flossing: one option is to use superfloss to do the bits between the gum margin and the wire; I use proxy brushes/interdens sticks for that part on the advice of my dentist, I find this easier and it seems to be doing an equally good job. I use Piksters no. 10 for this.

My ortho insists on bonded as well as Essix at night.

My hygienist made a comment that patients at the practice I go to had much less loss of results than the other practice she works at.

I have a bonded lower, and I WISH I had gotten a bonded upper too. I hear from other people that they do not last forever, but I have had mine for more than 10 years. Whenever I get my teeth cleaned I am always asked how long I intend to keep it - apparently it is still in decent condition, not causing me problems. The only place I cannot get floss between are my centrals but my gums and teeth are not suffering from it.

My lowers have not moved at all but my uppers have a little and it bothers me. Removeable retention probably only works 100% if you wear them all the time indefinitely.

I would second the comment that most people do get bonded ones - at least lowers. My ortho had said that was normal practice unless there was a specific reason why not. There is a much better chance of preserving results. A poll would be interesting - anybody here NOT get a bonded? I would have been extremely worried not to get a bonded, nearly everybody I knew or had known that had had braces and not gotten a bonded had some degree of relapse - and lower teeth seem to relapse worse than upper teeth.

I've got bonded retainers top and bottom, and also wear essix retainers at night. I find this combination works pretty well; I can barely feel the wires, and after a couple of nights was comfortable with the essix retainers. The first time I wore them they set of my gag reflex, but its always been overly sensitive.

The other advantage of this combo is that if you bonded retainer breaks, you just pop the other one on until you can get to the ortho.

i have had upper an lower bonded since feb 08, this being said there fine , an i don't mind them ay all , yes i know there inplace , as they do catch food no big deal . an i also sleep in a positioner at night to help hold the teeth in place an the lower jaw foward at night , an yes i HATE that thing, an i also have removable hawleys that i mst wear in the day hours , NOW this all said , Yes i have a small gap open just after the bonded upper retainer , wich my orthodontist would like me to go back into upper braces for a while , yes some case's are very long an tuff , as mine was , but for the most case all retainers work well , an looks like all of the time in treatment we spend , some slight movement can happen , sorry for the long post but this is mine ,

I have both on uppers aswell, mainly to prevent a gap from re-opening.

Loving the bonded retainer, doesn't stick out at all and so nice to know that my teeth are secure. Essix at night to stop the molars moving.

Just noticed this post was started last Oct....so if the original poster sees this....how are u finding life without braces :D

If you put on bonded on top do you need an essix too?

Anyone have bonded on top with no essix?

I only had braces on my top teeth to close a gap and slight overbite. I have a bonded retainer and Essix retainer to be worn at night.
