No retainer? VERY WORRIED

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

No retainer? VERY WORRIED

#1 Post by juxtapose12 »

Hey so I just got my braces off today and they look perfect (: the ortho placed a permanent retainer behind my upper six and lower six but the ortho didn't take any impressions. So I asked if I was getting a retainer and he said the only one I am getting is the permanent one already in my mouth.
I'm worried because I don't want my teeth or my bite to shift. I've never heard of this before. All the people I know who have had braces had a retainer.

Is that normal? Has anyone else had this experience?

I know SO many people who have only the bonded retainer such as you have. They've had them for years (in some cases decades) and have had no relapse at all.

I have also heard of some people who have both bonded and removable retainers. The bonded retainers were to hold the front teeth in place and the removable retainers were to hold the larger back teeth in place.

Hope this helps!
