are essix retainers supposed to add pressure ?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

are essix retainers supposed to add pressure ?

#1 Post by fff »

my new retainers dont add any pressure to my teeth. they just sit on top of my teeth and let the gaps between my teeth open. where the teeth should be firmly together now there are small spaces. i can even floss without touching my teeth. i am losing patience. i want a new retainer. is my orthodontist supposed to make me a new one or do i have to pay?

If you have a problem you should go to your ortho as soon as possible. They may have some kind of time limit on "free" fixes. They might make you pay again anyways, since you already have a retainer. But if you don't like the gaps showing up, pay for a new, better retainer if you have to.

I already did but they told me to wait until my next follow up. i am afraid the ortho is gonna tell me that my teeth are fine and that that's the way they are supposed to be :(

When is your follow up visit? It sounds like maybe you'd prefer a hawley instead of an essix, did you have the option to ask for a certain type of retainer before your braces were removed? Even if you have to wait for your followup visit, make sure to call them and explain your concerns to your ortho so he or she is aware of what you want when you arrive at your followup.... at least you can make sure it's even an option, and they could have things ready to take a mold for the replacement.
