Tooth Sensetivity
Hi,
New to braces today. Whilst brushing my teeth I discovered I now have a tooth that hurts, just thinking about brushing it! Just touching it with a brush is agony. It's like I'm poking at hot poker straight into the nerve. Never had a problem with this tooth before. It is not hot and cold sensitive, does not hurt in general, just when touching a very particular part with my tooth brush or finger. No probs prior to now brushing it etc. Is this normal...
Thanks.

Re: Tooth Sensetivity
One of my premolars and canines became super sensitive about 3 days before I got my braces off. Needless to say, taking the bracket off those teeth hurt like hell! But I've been brushing with Sensodyne since and the sensitivity has all but gone away. That's what I'd recommend. I think some pain and sensitivity is normal at first, so take your ibuprofen and brush with Sensodyne. If it doesn't subside in a couple days, I'd ask your ortho/dentist.

Re: Tooth Sensetivity
I've had sensitive teeth for a few years now and the feeling I get/got from that is a sharp feeling and it makes my teeth go on edge. It would also come on when drinking cold liquid or going out in the cold and breathing in the cold air through my mouth.
Now, from what you describe it sounds like it's due to your braces and isn't really 'sensitivity' caused by dentin being exposed. When I got my braces on 2 weeks ago, after a few hours my teeth became sore (not sensitive, there's certainly a difference) and most of them hurt to touch and brush... and floss? wow that was very painful!
If your tooth feels sore then I'd say this is normal and is being caused by the pressure from your braces. My soreness died down a little by about day 5, I still have it in some teeth but it's certainly alot more bearable than it was at first.

I found that using Sensodyne toothpaste helped a little bit. But the soreness and sensitivity is pretty normal. It goes away.

I agree, this has definitely helped me.

Any fluoride paste and fluoride mouth wash will help. There is no point in spending $$$ on Sensodine.I bought one recently following all the review about how it helps to whiten teeth and I am NOT impressed especially given that it is 2 times more expensive then the paste I was using.
When I had sensitivity problem I used Tom's of main or some Tradoe's Joe house brand - and it helped just right. even though I had part of my lower tooth really tipped after some unliky overdone bonding on the tooth above it.

If you have not yet got one then get yourself some sonic care tooth brush. worked great for me.MelB wrote:Hi,
