permanent retainer :(

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

permanent retainer :(

#1 Post by pigonthego »

I'm going in on Tuesday to have my lower retainer removed and getting fitted for a spring retainer. My teeth have shifted since being debraced November 11th. Besides the movement I really don't like the permanent retainer as it seems to hinder me thoroughly cleaning the backside of my teeth. I may just stay with a removable retainer. Has anyone else found this to be the case?

I have a permanent retainer on my top teeth, and a removable spring retainer for my bottom teeth. My top braces came off in late October. No noticeable movement yet (knock on wood!), but I'm definitely concerned about the long-term stability of my upper teeth. I may actually request to have an upper Hawley that I can wear at night (in addition to my permanent retainer) made at my next appointment.

As far as cleaning is concerned, flossing is definitely more difficult with my permanent retainer, but I use a Waterpik as a supplement, and it works pretty well. I also use it to clean the back of my teeth, where the permanent retainer is attached - it's pretty effective for that purpose as well.

Do you currently have a permanent retainer on your top teeth as well, or a removable?

Yes I have permanent on my upper and lower. I wear an essix at night. My uppers look great but the front lowers have shifted. Considering what the used to look like they aren't bad. I figure if I spent the time and money I want them as nice as possible. The flossing isn't bad with self threaded floss. Looking forward to getting this straightened out :)
