Braces off! How long to adjust to bonded retainer?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Braces off! How long to adjust to bonded retainer?

#1 Post by sapphirerose924 »

I got debanded yesterday. I'm happy to have the braces off, though my rearmost molar bands on the bottom teeth had to be cut off. They couldn't get them off the same way as the upper ones and the front two bottom ones.

The bonded retainer on the bottom is really irritating my tongue. How long would you say it takes to get used to it?

I was looking forward to flossing normally, not mostly normally, so the bonded retainer is a bit of a disappointment, especially when I find studies detailing the benefits of leaving them on for 20 years, but overall. I am very happy.

I got lots of good information from these boards, even though I didn't post a lot.

Thanks! :D

It only took me a couple days to get used to it (and I have mine behind my 8 front bottom teeth instead of 6). For the first couple days, it kind of felt like something was stuck there, but after eating and drinking normally, I became used to feeling it there (and hey, it's still much better than having braces still, lol).

Thanks!

I only have a bonded on the bottom and a removable on the top. All the people who have both a bonded and a removable on the bottom are making me nervous now. I need to be careful with what I read. I am going to attempt to trust my ortho. He has done a good job thus far.

random question, do you have a little hard time adjusting to your speech? My neighbor's boy has a little difficulty speaking, he had his taken off a couple of weeks ago, and I think he's adjusting to it. Maybe this is normal, I don't know.
