Essix retainer doesn't fit (its brand new)

#1 Post by francis29 »

TIA!

I was debanded on top last Wednesday and picked up my Essix today and it only covers half of my teeth and is VERY uncomfortable. I have a Hawley coming in next week but for now we are using this to keep the teeth from moving, and they are moving FAST. Ortho said to wear the Essix as close to 24/7 as possible taking it out only to eat quickly and brush teeth. **this is why I didn't do Invisalign/fixed braces is better than this thing. Anyway, has anyone ever gotten their Essix and it didn't fit (was too tight or didn't cover their teeth) from the first day they got it?

I understand most here got their Essix the day of their deband but my 8 days delay has really done a number on my teeth. It is crazy how fast the regression happened to me. Ortho said that after 24/7 for 2-3 days the teeth will move into place via the Essix? Is this true?

Thank you!

Frances

Hello!

I was debanded on Tuesday and I picked up my retainer only three hours ago. I also have an Essix and it doesn't fit very well at the minute either. However, when the ortho put my retainer in for the first time he commented on how it would be very tight as a result of my teeth beginning to move slightly since there was no longer anything 'holding them in place'. Needless to say it was, and still is now, i have about a millimetres gap between the bottom of my teeth and the bottom of the retainer, so it doesn't fit perfectly yet.

When my ortho was putting my retainer in he said that it can help to take it out and then put it back in, which can sometimes help with the tight fit. He also said that for about 2-3 hours it wouldn't fit right and i had to keep gently putting pressure on it to get it to fit, so far that seems to be working because the gap between my retainer edge and teeth edge is closing slightly. At the minute though they're pretttyy sore, guess it's just my teeth being put back to their 'perfect' position with the retainer :)

Hope this helps!

Lauryn.

Lauryn,

Congratulations on debanding!

Your advice does help, wow you were only out of braces 3 hours and Essix was still not fitting right. Imagine 8 days! I have had my Essix in every minute now pretty much (eating meals quickly to get it back on) and after almost 24 hours the space btwn my teeth and the bottom of the retainer is smaller and the Essix now covers 3/4 of my teeth now, up from the 1/2 yesterday when I got it. It no longer hurts to wear and the teeth are shifting back into place. I was also told to keep pushing it up all throughout the day.

I am glad I was that squeaky wheel at the ortho and demanded the Essix made from my Day of Deband mold bc my teeth had shifted a lot in 8 days. My two front top teeth were starting to tip in and my 2nd top teeth (will never learn the names of the teeth even after braces 3 x) were one was starting to over lap and the other rotating back to slanted so that has been improved dramatically in the 20 hours in the Essix.

I think I will have to wear these retainers for life if this is how fast the teeth move. It won't be so bad I guess....

Also, do you have pictures of your teeth without your braces, I saw them when you first got them on, so you must be so happy with your results!

Thanks!!!

Frances

My guess is that once you get your hawley, your teeth will come back to even closer to the day of debanding. I'm VERY suprised that your ortho didn't get you that Essix on the debanding day or the the day after.

My teeth shifted out with my essix and have been brought back in by my hawley.

Kat,

My ortho doesn't have in office Essix ability so they take a week to get. And the original plan was to make the Hawley and have it in a week after deband, but the ortho's assistant didn't get enough of the impression for the roof of my mouth and the Hawley could not be made. I have been in my Essix which fits perfectly now and I only take it out to eat. Near 22-23 hours a day it is in.

I went to pick up my Hawley yesterday but because it was made from the mold 5 days after debanding and my teeth had visibly shifted, it didn't fit at all. We could not even get it onto my teeth, or in my mouth.

Ortho took my day of deband mold out and put my Essix on it and it fit like a glove and then tried my hawley and it wouldn't go on it and we didn't want to break the mold bc that is the only mold we have of my day of debanded teeth, and I will need it in case I need another Essix someday when this wears out. I guess we could make a mold of my teeth today for a Hawley but the Essix is working fine.

Since my teeth move really quickly, and my bottoms are coming off next week in order to avoid what just happened with my tops, we made an impression of my bottoms for a Hawley to be given to me to wear the day of deband next week then we will make the impression for the Essix and I will have both for the bottom. Of course, my bottom teeth were the least of my problems but I will have two retainers for them. As long as my teeth remain as they were the day the braces came off I don't care if its a Hawley or an Essix to do that.

Thanks!
