Retainers in... freaking out... my rant... ?!

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Retainers in... freaking out... my rant... ?!

#1 Post by ibraceface »

Okay.. I imagine someone else has posted this.. and I did search prior to posting.. but needed to rant...

So, yesterday before getting my braces off, my bite felt perfect! Maybe a teeny bit wonky in some areas... but was assured it may just need a little bit of sanding down from the dentist to be "perfect-perfect." But... it was 99% good.. every tooth touched, etc.

Well... immediately after getting debraced.. nothing touched.. my bite felt funky as ever! I was reassured by the ortho and the dentist that it was normal... that my teeth were probably in "freak out mode" and that they needed time to calm down and settle... but... despite there reassurance.. this still completely freaks me out... :(

Aside from that... everything hurts... and putting in the retainer hurts... and my teeth are kinda wobbley... not loose... just... free... which is weird.

I was told only to wear the retainer at night... but have had it in 24/7 because I am so scared to go without it.. haha, it just makes me feel safe. A security blanket I guess.. after being in braces 5 years... I just am terrified of things moving and going back in braces... am I being silly?

Lol... aside from all this, which I hear is all pretty normal and will go away in a few days... I still love my smile. Just freaking out a bit. I hope all this subsides and everything goes back to normal soon.

What have you all experience? I just want to eat a piece of corn on the cob... but feel too wobbly and sore to do so! Oh boy!

Totally normal for your teeth to feel wobbly, and your bite to feel off. It gets better omce the teeth start to settle a bit, but totally weird until then. I had to wear my retainers 24/7 for about 6 months, then only at night after the six months. Try not to freak out too much and enjoy that beautiful new smile :)

What she said.

(And I'm sure Bob_with_a_girl appreciates your new smile. :jump: )
