What kind AND how much adjusting can retainers achieve?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

What kind AND how much adjusting can retainers achieve?

#1 Post by VA5 »

I am about to be debanded on the top, after almost 3 years. I still have issues that I am not happy about, however I am SO ready to get these things off. Most things are very minor, but one in particular is bugging me. I feel like my arch hasn't rounded off as much as I'd like. I don't know if my teeth are tipping inwards or if it's just the shape of my arch. I have an essix on the bottom which I am GUESSING is similar to an invisalign tray. Which made me wonder, if I get an essix on the top too, can my ortho round out the top and bottom a little bit so I have a fuller looking mouth/teeth/arch? Has anybody heard of such a thing?

i think it's better to speak what's on your mind now to your dentist before it's removed. Better to correct it using braces than retainer.

Probably already done but a hawley retainer allows more adjustment than an essix does -- not even sure if an essix allows for any adjustment.

Bullfighter, I just picked up my essix retainers today - the ortho can in fact make minor adjustments, apparently he had already made some tweaks to my retainer before my first wear - he will then review in a few weeks. This has made me happy he knew I was a perfectionist and a nit-pick with the alignment of some teeth :) I will get perm bonded retainers in 6 months.
