fitting for retainers?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

fitting for retainers?

#1 Post by OldBikerBag »

I'm still about six months or so out from retainers, but a question has been bugging me: How do you get fitted for retainers?

Obviously, dental impressions can't be taken with braces in place and the old model of my teeth no longer applies. So...how do they do it?

I think impressions can be taken with brackets still on your teeth. Hope I will be finding out soon!

For mine my permanent retainers were put on first. Then my braces were removed. Then impressions taken for essix retainers. This was all in one appointment. I collected the essix 2 days later.

When the lab receives the impressions, they make models that have brackets on the teeth. They shave off the brackets when they make the retainer. At my ortho though I believe they remove the brackets first, take impressions, and fit a retainer a couple of days later.

I had an appointment today. So I asked.

It looks like a permanent retainer will go on the backs of my lowers, the braces removed and then impressions taken for Essix for both top and bottom. It looks like the retainers will be made right in the ortho's office, so I'll go home with them that day.

And I'll only have to wear them at night.

Lucky! I get a fixed bonded retainer top and bottom on the front 4 teeth, a 24 hour retainer for 18 months and then I can wear it only at night :(

I'll be whining and begging to forego the permanent one and just see how I do with the Essix. I'll even promise to wear it 24/7 if it'll help me weasel out of a bonded one. I like feeling the smoothness of the backs of my lower teeth.
