Once I get debraced, within the next month or so, I will have two large gaps until I get bridge work done.
Does anyone have any idea how a retainer will work for me? Will there be something to hold the gaps open? I am confused because it will be a long time before I get the bridge work done.
Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the retainer won't CLOSE those gaps it will merely hold your teeth in place the way they were the day you got them off.

Re: ? re: retainers before bridgework is done
i have to get bridgework done too! i have been wearing retainers in the meantime though - bridgework won't be till april or may (i had to get a crown lengthening procedure done, and now i'm waiting for it to heal), and we waiting a while after debracing before starting that.
i was debraced last spring (may? or june?) and wore essix tob & bottom for a few months; then had a check and my ortho said i could go bottom only, and just check the uppers once in a while (i.e. if i could put the retainer in easily & without discomfort, i didn't have to keep wearing it).
now both my uppers and lowers have stabilised/stopped wanting to move (i also have a wire on the lowers), so we'll be able to go ahead with the bridgework.
