After having a fixed brace on my upper teeth, I had a bonded retainer fitted which I will keep for an indefinite period. My ortho places this type of retainer in cases where she thinks there is a high chance of relapse.
I was also given a clear essix retainer to wear 12 hours each night pending my review in 6 months time.
I was concerned that the essix retainer might wear out reasonably quickly so I asked my ortho if I could pay to have a hawley retainer as well to act as back up and for longer term use. My ortho agreed this was a good idea and I received my hawley yesterday.
So I have one of each of the main types of retainer. Pictures attached.

Re: Full house of retainers
Sounds a prudent (and good) idea Jem. I'm still in braces but my gf hates that her (pair of) essix shrunk leaving her with nothing now she's sure they have moved. I was thinking of asking for a bonded retainer just because I'm sure I'll not be a "perfect" patient about wearing them.
