how often to replace retainers?

Just wondering how often retainers need to be replaced? Mine is looking like it has seen better days. It seems to still be working, it is super tight when I put it in, and my teeth are still sore in the morning like that have always been...it just starting to look pretty beat up. What's the average lifespan of these things? I've been out of braces for 4 years now I think, maybe.

Do you have an essix or hawley?

I actually have both kinds. I've been wearing the essix ones more, as I feel like the wire on hawley needs some adjusting.
