Recent deband and tooth shifted, can Hawley correct this?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Recent deband and tooth shifted, can Hawley correct this?

#1 Post by RS27 »

I was debraced almost 8 weeks ago and had upper & lower Essix retainers before my Hawleys came in. After 2 weeks of exclusively wearing my Hawleys my upper right canine has moved slightly and shifted outward. One of my many goals with braces was to correct that exact tooth because it was sticking out.

When I wear my upper Essix I can feel my canine being pushed inward again. However I am reluctant to wear the Essix because it shifts my back molar and makes an unbearable contact between the top and bottom molars. Eventually the tooth settles and goes back into place but it’s an uncomfortable process.

I have an appointment in 2.5 weeks to adjust my Hawley but I’m wondering if bending or tweaking the wire is enough to shift my canine back into its correct position. Has anyone had experience with a Hawley being adjusted to reposition a tooth?

Thank you in advance.

I know this thread is old, but I've had something similar happen with my lower left 1st premolar and lateral incisor forming a small gap due to the way my lower Hawley retainer wire was pushing down between those teeth, which was noticed at my 1 year retainer check appointment on 5/16/2024. My orthodontist offered me 2 options: to have a button attached to the backs of those 2 teeth connected with a small powerchain for a few months (plus some new sets of clear retainers in the meantime that would've essentially functioned as Invisalign aligners for those few months) or to take a wait and see approach to see if the gap would close on its own after a wire adjustment with my current Hawley.

Ultimately, I chose the latter of those 2 options not wanting to endure any more pain and discomfort from having my teeth being moved around unless absolutely necessary after having finally been debonded a year prior to that appointment after 3 1/2 years of braces and because of how it was a minor issue and not even very noticeable unless you were take a closer look at my mouth (for the record, that gap did close on its own shortly after my wire was repositioned on the left side, with my orthodontist even explaining to me that not only are my retainer wires apparently thicker than normally seen with Hawleys, but also that she thinks that the issue may have been related to how much pressure was being placed onto an incisor that's in a transposed position given how incisors are a little easier to move and more sensitive to pressure than canines).
