My Fixed Retainer
A few days ago I came to this forum to see what people thought about fixed retainers. I was happy to read some posts and worried about others. I got my fixed retainer on my lower teeth yesterday and I am so relieved! I found it very uncomfortable to get it on but once on, it feels fine. I found that I cannot stop rubbing my tongue over it, but I am getting used to it. I was also worried about sleep with it on, that too is easy! So if any of you are yet to have your retainer put in, don’t worry about it like I did. It’s easy to wear and I am getting used to it. I am getting a plate to wear on top when I get my top braces off in a couple of months. Keep smiling.

I, too, was surprised as to how easy it was to get used to the fixed retainers....they feel really...weird at first, but after like two days they didn't bother me at all!
Damon 2's top and bottom, BRACED 02/22/04 and REMOVED 08/29/05. Now in bonded retainers (top and bottom) :4 wisdom teeth surgically removed on 12/22/05:

Piece of cake
I like my bonded retainers too. It is taking some getting used to (I am rubbing my tongue raw touching the bottom one), but overall, it's great that I don't have to take them one and off.
Damon 2's for 18 months, removed 11/03/05
I got a fixed retainer a week ago -braces still stay for a bit over a week to stabilize the system. (Geez, I'm looking forward to get them away!)
I, too, keep rubbing my tongue against the retainer, but otherwise it's quite ok. I don't think it will be a problem in the long run. I only wish it was completely smooth -the surface is slightly "sandy" at least for now. Perhaps it will wear out a bit and become smooth by time.
Only it would be nice for oral hygiene to be able to take it off and floss reeally properly. Interdental brushes work pretty well and fastly, though.
