How do you clean your retainer?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

I have two hawley retainers and my ortho said to just brush them with toothpaste and if I notice any buildup then to soak them in 1/2 water 1/2 vinegar for 10 minutes then brush normally. She said that denture cleaner or retainer cleaner is fine too but not to use anything with alcohol or to boil them. Also no peroxide because she wasn't sure if that could cause the acrylic to change colors and since mine are lime green and teal so they could possibly fade.

I just soaked my Invisalign in half peroxide half water then brushed and I never had a problem with buildup on those but again don't use alcohol for those either.

I soak in dish soap every day, and soak in baking soda a couple times/week.

I use Dawn dish washing soap and it works great! They come out bright and shiny! We use Dawn to clean our forks and knives and those go into your mouth, so it makes sense to use it to clean off all the germs and food from your retainers too!

I have an Essix retainer on my top teeth, and my hygenist suggested just using soap and warm water with a soft-bristled toothbrush. I've also experimented with alcohol-free mouthwash like Listerine Zero, it works pretty good and it also gets the odors out of it
