Whitening with Essix Retainers?

An odd question:

I really want to whiten my teeth immediately after de-bracing next week.

I have an appointment to have "whitening trays" made (which are trays that look like invisalign, kind of?)

Do you possibly think that the Essix retainers (which I'll have) could be used as whitening trays? I mean, I'll be wearing them anyways... if I could just use slip some whitening solution in there...

I might be crazy to even consider this, and I'm going to ask my ortho too (who already thinks I'm crazy).

I used my retainers as whitening trays. It was my dentist's idea, actually... he said it would be a waste of money to make trays when I already had the retainers and they would do exactly the same job. I just had to be sure to take them out after the required amount of time with the whitening solution, wash them well and put them back.

When I was debraced, and my ortho said I was getting Essix retainers, the first thing he told me was that they could be used as whitening trays. I guess they are pretty much the same as the whitening trays they would make if you were just doing the whitening. I have used them a few times for whitening, but I have slacked off on that. I need to start doing it again, but I am so impatient, I want them white immediately!
