How soon teeth shift

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

How soon teeth shift

#1 Post by Keith »

I just had my braces taken off today and I was happy but now, about 9 hours later, a small (very small) gap has opened up. The ortho wanted to do my retainers today but I had to work. I go Monday and I'm trying not to stress out, because the retainer will move the teeth back, right? It might just be tight? Anyone else have this problem? Please tell me everything will be alright :D

Don't stress out. Your teeth won’t truly stabilize until about a year down the road. The retainer will move them back, and diligent wear will ensure your teeth stay put.

I got my retainers the day they came off, but it turned out my bottom one didn't fit. My ortho took a new mold and ordered me another one. I got them off on Monday and now about 5 days later my bite is off as the bottom have slightly shifted. It happens. It's fixable.

Deep breath. You are fine.

I don't know why your ortho did not give you an impression appointment before debanding. When we ready to deband, mine give 2 appointments (ussually debanding are 2 weeks after the impression appointment), mines where Nov 27th & Dec 13th. They gave me both appointments after my last adjustment 5 weeks previous. Hopefully your teeth won't shift too much. Good luck!

Don't worry, your teeth won't shift. I didn't get my retainer until 8days after my appointment when I got my braces off! Your retainer just feels tight, but soon your teeth will move back into their original places. Good Luck!

The retainer should put them back.

Thanks for the replies! When I was at work, I ran into an orthodontist and he laughed and said not to worry because he sometimes doesn't have patients come back for retainers for two weeks.
