??permanent retainer question??

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

??permanent retainer question??

#1 Post by kareemcheese »

So as many of you I have had braces... I wanna say it's been about 5 years since i've had them off. After getting them taken off i tried a Hawley retainer for a little while. It didn't exactly do the job so my ortho threw on a permanent retainer which is what i've had on since then. About 4 years later i have run into a little problem...

this happened a few minutes ago and i instinctively jumped online to look for an explanation or moreso some peace of mind. i finished drinking a bottle of OJ and took the little plastic ring from the brim of the bottle off. for some reason i thought it would be appropriate to chew it out of boredom while watching TV. while chewing it i heard a crack... as if one of my teeth broke... to be honest it felt like i really had broken a tooth. i got up and took a close look at the tooth and it ended up being completely fine. what ended up happening though was that the outward pressure from the plastic on my tooth caused the tooth to pop off of my permanent retainer forward creating an extremely small gap between the tooth and the retainer. so now instead of the tooth being bound to the retainer by the cement it is kind of just floating against it. anyone have any advice (besides "go to your ortho asap" because i'm working on that haha) or any encounters similar to mine because i'm pretttty concerned right now and would appreciate any positive feedback/help. thanks in advance and to all with permanent retainers - watch out for bottles
thanks again

Hi
I have just had a bonded retainer fitted. The ortho told me that these do fail eventually (usually the glue cracks somewhere) and that if this happened to go in immediately so that he could reapair it for me. Do you have a removable retainer as well? If so I would wear this 24/7 till you can get to the ortho.

Good luck, let us know how you get on.
