Retainers as noticeable as braces?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Retainers as noticeable as braces?

#1 Post by michael33 »

When the retainer is put in, is the front wire at the same height on the teeth as regular braces would be or does it sit higher than braces? Is it less or more noticeable than braces?

It looks crap. I have¨now a Hawley retainer on my top. There is no way I will take Hawley when I will get my retainer.

Platinum has a hawley retainer as a bite block right now. She will get her upper braces soon...then when all is done she will have retention with some sort of retainer. She's hoping NOT hawleys.

My hawley shows almost as much as my braces did. The wire is just about at the same place it was with my braces. But for some reason, people are less "interrested" in retainers than they were in braces.

To wear I'm not sure what Hawleys are like as I have Essix retainers but I can say that Hawleys are alot more noticeable. Either way if they do there job thats the most important thing.

My wire or band on my hawley is currently LOWER than the position of the archwire. It wasn't always this low but my ortho is doing something funky with it to move the teeth I think.
