Hawley acrylic rubbing on gumline

Hawley acrylic rubbing on gumline

#1 Post by Chris »

My lower hawley seems to be digging into my tongue side on the bone ridge. Anybody else with that problem? Wondering if the springs that are there are beginning to irritate the gum tissue.

Chris,

I originally had a Essex retainer on top (I love it!) but my teeth weren’t "settling" and my bite feels a bit off when I don’t have my retainer in, so...I got a Hawley. The plastic rubs on the roof of my mouth and my teeth are quite sore all over again, especially the front ones:( And it doesn’t even feel like its in all the way… I am currently searching to see if others are having this problem….

I have a permanent retainer on the bottom and wish that I could get one on top too, but they say that I’ll just bite it off….

I think ill give my ortho a call and see what he says. You should too…Hope the pain goes away soon for you though.

Well I figured out the problem with my lower hawley. I ended up with a root canal on a tooth in that area and the pain has gone. I figured it was the hawley acrylic rubbing but I can see now much of it was referred pain from that darn tooth! Problem is, the ortho chiseled away at the acrylic to make it more comfortable and I'm finding that its a bit loose now. Wonder if they can ADD acrylic to the retainer? I hate going back to the ortho at this point.

The upper hawley is fine but I notice at sometimes the acrylic at the roof of my mouth rubs into the palate a bit. Nothing too bad...nice to be able to take the retainer out when you need to...not like braces! (You didn't read this comment).

Oh, and yes, my front teeth are sore too with the upper hawley too.
