Essix Retainers - how important?

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

Essix Retainers - how important?

#1 Post by aurich »

Well it looks like I just lost my second pair of Essix retainers. The 1st new ones I got they gave me them for free. Getting another pair would be $160. I've been out of braces for over 6 months now. How important are these retainers?

Very....if you like your teeth where they are.
Full upper and lower metal braces put on May 12, 2005.

Braces free as of April 18, 2006!

Temporarily rebraced Nov. 21, 2006. ( I think I've moved past temporary. )

Brace free again - July 26, 2007.

I was under the impression it took at least a year for your teeth to settle into their new positions after braces, so I would guess you would have had to wear your retainer for another 6 months.

Thank you all for the help, very good to know.

Luckily, I found my retainers! Looks like my cat had swept them under my couch. Ironically, I also found the pair I had lost previously within the hour, so I now have two pairs!

My ortho says 2 years overnight only wear, then you're "probably ok" but to keep it perfect a couple nights a week for the rest of your life is a good idea...

My son wore his fairly regularly for 2 years then quit completely after that and his teeth moved a lot. Almost like they were just waiting for their opportunity to run! :yikes:

Of course his experience may not be typical, but I am not trusting MY teeth to stay put on their own. . . EVERY!

Glad you found your retainers!!!
