retainer buildup

If you have finished with your orthodontic treatment and are wearing retainers (or will be soon), this is a special place to connect with others in your (enviable) situation. Ask a question or make a comment about life post-braces.

retainer buildup

#1 Post by tkais »

I've had my retainers for almost 4 months now and I have notices some white residue or something, mostly on my bottom retainer. Has any one else had this. I brush them everytime I brush my teeth and us Retainer Brite several times a week and it just doesn't come off. Any suggestions?

I have this problem with my upper hawley. Ugh. I need to use retainer brite every day to keep it under control. I have no idea why this happens, I used to have a retainer before this new one and it never happened to that one. Maybe the material used? The lower hawley isn't as bad with build up but the upper is a pain in the neck. Brushing doesn't remove it either. I use a sonic cleaner too. My teeth seem to be free of plaque though, I brush and floss several times per day.

I have the same problem on my lower Hawleys and I've only had them for 2 weeks! I see this white buildup on mine. My only instructions were to brush my retainers with toothbrush and toothpaste so I don't even use anything else--is Retainer Brite safe? If you still see residue then maybe it doesn't help and isn't worth it, though...?

Retainer Brite will work for me if I use it every day and lightly brush the retainers. I ordered a huge supply since I use it all the time. Brushing alone does basically nothing.

Thanks for everyones comments. Very helpful. Maybe I will get it professionally cleaned next time I'm at the ortho or dentist.

I get the same stuff on my Essix lowers. If I'm very faithful with the Retainer Brite ( which I'm not ) they look great though.
